SUMMARY:BPA Scientific Meeting - Starting out in Life….Again | Becky Hall
DESCRIPTION:BPA Scientific Meeting \nSaturday 14th November 2026\n11am – 1pm \nStarting out in Life….Again \nBecky Hall \nBook your ticket now\nThis paper draws on the contribution of psychoanalytic thinking about children to our understanding of the beginnings of psychological life\, work with parents\, carers\, adopters\, and the treatment of very deprived children. It describes work with an experienced foster carer\, undertaken in a specialist NHS LAC CAMHS which is co-located with Local Authority Children’s services. Ordinarily committed to short periods of emergency fostering\, this ‘baby-carer’ puts herself into the immediate vicinity of acute states of infantile pain and distress within a context and timeframe that function to protect her own mental state. Temporarily she enters the necessary state of mind of a primarily preoccupied mother\, supported in the knowledge that the situation is held by the third\, background presence of the Local Authority who will support her adult capacities and separate the dyad within the agreed period.  It makes use of a series of consultations in which the therapist must quickly feel her way into the state of mind of a deeply traumatised young child whose adoption has broken down. The efforts to work together with the child and her fostering ‘baby  carer’\, and the traumatised child revived in the foster carer by the therapeutic work\, result in new possibilities for both as they each start out in life\, again. \nThe paper hopes to be of interest to all who work with children\, adults and traumatised patients across the life cycle. \nBecky Hall qualified as a Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist from the Tavistock Clinic in 2009 and subsequently trained as a Psychoanalyst with the British Psychoanalytic Association (BPA). She has worked extensively in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) and has a particular interest in fostering\, adoption and parental mental health. Alongside her NHS work she has a private clinical practice\, supervises\, writes\, and teaches. She is an ACP registered Training Analyst and a Trustee of the Stuart Hall Foundation through which she co-ordinates support for disadvantaged students hoping to train as Child Psychotherapists at the Tavistock Clinic. \nThe opinions and views expressed are entirely those of the speaker in a personal capacity and do not necessarily reflect the policies or opinions of the BPA.

SUMMARY:BPA Poetic Mind | AWAKE! Blake and the Power of the Imagination
DESCRIPTION:AWAKE! Blake and the Power of the Imagination. William Blake’s Call to Us Now \nDr Mark Vernon\nwriter\, broadcaster and psychotherapist and a former Anglican priest. \nMonday 7th December 2026\n8-9.30pm\nOnline only \nChair discussant David Howell Morgan \nBook your ticket nowThe year 2027 marks the bicentenary of the death of William Blake\, poet\, painter and prophet\, and it is worth asking what his work has to say to an unconscious that finds itself\, two centuries on\, no less in need of awakening. Blake sought to rouse his readers from a slumber they did not know they were in\, offering not instruction but a kind of psychic loosening\, an invitation to perceive eternity with the eyes of imagination rather than with the flattened\, reality-testing eye that mistakes the given world for the only possible one. In this his project runs close to that of psychoanalysis itself\, which likewise begins from the premise that what passes for perception is already shaped by defence\, and that a return to a more primary imaginative capacity is both a labour and a risk.\nHis visionary work suggests that the modern worldview\, with its allegiance to what he called single vision\, performs a kind of occlusion\, foreclosing certain forms of knowing much as a defence forecloses an unwelcome truth\, even as it simultaneously opens new possibilities that an earlier consciousness could not have held. \nMark Vernon is a London-based writer\, broadcaster and psychotherapist\, and a former Anglican priest. He holds a PhD in philosophy from Warwick University\, degrees in theology from Oxford and Durham\, and a physics degree from Durham. He works in private practice as a psychodynamic psychotherapist\, and has previously worked at the Maudsley Hospital in a personality disorder service. \nHis writing moves between ancient philosophy\, theology and depth psychology\, with recent books on William Blake\, Dante’s Divine Comedy\, spiritual intelligence and Owen Barfield. He is a regular contributor to Radio 4’s Thought for the Day\, and writes for the BBC\, Aeon\, Church Times\, The Tablet and The Idler\, where he has a column. He also hosts the podcast Inner Life and co-runs the improvisation duo Philosophy Slam!
