The British Psychoanalytic Association (BPA) aims to help qualified members to further develop and establish their psychoanalytic identity and clinical practice. This stage in career development is designed to encourage the growth of expertise such as would be appropriate to senior status in the Association.

The Fellowship Committee came to the view that it is an advantage to those applying for Fellowship (F) to attend the F Course and participate with their colleagues in Theoretical and Clinical Seminars and have Consultations. Distance is not an issue.

To obtain Fellowship the applicant must successfully complete a two year course followed by a presentation of their clinical work to a Panel.

Eligibility

  1. Applications can be considered from members after two years qualification with the BPA.
  2. Members are required to have seen at least three patients post-qualification who have been in analysis for 4 or 5 sessions per week prior to application.
  3. Two patients should have been seen for at least two years post-qualification and the other for at least one year post-qualification.
  4. One of these patients can be an on-going training case.
  5. It is expected that the three patients would be seen in person.
  6. In exceptional circumstances such as geographical distance or other limiting factors one patient may be seen remotely. However, the assessment process should always be carried out in person. The request to see the patient remotely should be put in writing, clearly outlining the reason and sent to Nina Wessels, Honorary Secretary of the Fellowship Committee. The decision will be made by the Fellowship Committee.

Application Procedure

Anyone interested in applying in the near future for Fellowship should request the Application Form for the Fellowship course from the Training Co-ordinator at training@psychoanalysis-bpa.org. Applicants meeting the criteria set out below will be offered one or two interviews, in order to explore their readiness to proceed.
